In these tough economic times, our work is more important than ever. In 2006, Hispanics represented 15 percent of the U.S. population. As the fastest growing segment of the population and the youngest, in 2006, Hispanics comprised 20 percent of the pubic school enrollment and 12 percent of the undergraduate enrollment. It is projected that by 2017, Hispanic undergraduate enrollment will increase by 39 percent, far greater than the rate for all other ethnicities. However, while the population is quickly growing, parity in STEM education and workforce attainment has yet to be realized.
In fact, a study done by the National Science Foundation (Hill, 2002; Hill & Johnson, 2004) discusses the disparities of college degrees earned in STEM by Hispanic students and other racial/ethnic groups. In 2008, Hispanics earned only 7.8 percent of baccalaureate engineering degrees awarded to U.S. citizen and legal residents, an increase of two percentage points from 1999.
To address this persistent gap, our organization has over twenty initiatives in place to nurture the academic and career development of our Hispanic youth. Since our inception, we have directly reached over 10,000 students and indirectly reached countless other students and parents. In addition, each year we award over $250,000 in merit and need based scholarships to deserving Hispanic high school, undergraduate and graduate students pursuing STEM careers.
SHPE Foundation, a 501c3, tax-deductible non-profit organization welcomes your financial contributions in support of its educational endeavors to support scholarships and educational enrichment programs for Hispanic students pursuing academic studies in science, technology, engineering and math.
Thank for your support of Hispanic and Latino youth.
