The Advancing Careers in Engineering (ACE) Program funds activities
which increase the participation of youth preparing to enter engineering
and science related careers. These activities which are carried out by the
SHPE student and professional chapter members, include university visitations
by high school students, tours of industry, mentoring, parent
awareness meeting presentations, and tutoring. Through peer counseling
and studies, SHPE members help entering college students adapt to
college life, learn about college services, academic requirements and
leadership development.
The Two Major goals of the ACE Program are:
-
To outreach to out community and introduce the exciting career
opportunities in engineering and science to elementary, junior
high and high school students.
-
To support retention mechanisms by developing and reinforcing the
academic support systems at all levels of the education continuum to
increase the graduation rates of Hispanic engineering and science
students.
The ACE Program sponsors those community service and outreach
activities that aim to do one or more of the following:
-
Decrease the Latino high school student drop out rate.
-
Promote the attainment of undergraduate degrees in the science and
engineering fields.
-
Promote the attainment of advanced degrees in the science and
engineering fields.
Funded by corporate America and various public and private grants, the
ACE program has impacted over 257,000 students (K-16) in its twenty
year history. Over $630,000 has been expended to service this
vital program. The ACE program is the most cost effective
student advocacy, motivational and developmental program in the country.
