About the SHPE Jr. Chapter

The SHPE Foundation created the SHPE Jr. Chapter Program to support middle and high school students in overcoming persistent educational barriers and to encourage them to pursue STEM studies and careers. SHPE Jr. Chapters (Jr. Chapters) are established by local SHPE Student and Professional Chapters (SHPE Chapters) in partnership with school administrators at accredited middle and high schools within the United States and Puerto Rico. Jr. Chapters provide youth with opportunities to participate in hands-on STEM activities. For example, Jr. Chapter members can attend the Pre-College Symposium held at SHPE’s National Conference, participate in academic and engineering summer camps, compete in National Science Bowls, participate in local science fairs, and many other opportunities. Jr. Chapter members also receive mentoring and develop leadership skills through the active involvement of SHPE Chapter members.

Upon graduating from high school, Jr. Chapter members are encouraged to continue their involvement in SHPE by joining SHPE Student Chapters in college, then SHPE Professional Chapters as working professionals. This SHPE membership pathway provides a supportive, lasting network of Hispanic STEM peers throughout one’s academic and career journey.

How to Join a Jr. Chapter

There are two ways to become involved in the SHPE Jr. Program .

Eligibility
  • Middle and high school students, who do not have a formal SHPE Jr. Chapter at their school
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA
  • Should have some interest in math, science, technology or engineering

  • Must have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA
  • Should have some interest in math, science, technology or engineering
